The Canadian Health Food Association has just released their 2015 list of natural health trends – so let’s make this year the healthiest one yet!

With 2014 officially a thing of the past, many of us are looking for new and effective ways to optimize our health. Fortunately, the Canadian Health Food Association has just released their 2015 list of natural health trends—so that we can all make this year the healthiest one yet.

1. New cooking oils

Move out of the way coconuts—new oils are stepping up to the limelight for 2015. This year, avocado oil is taking centre stage, offering a high smoke point that makes it great for cooking and a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Camelina and flaxseed oils—which both contain a healthy dose of omega-3s—are also getting their time to shine.

2. Digestive health

Wanting to maintain good digestive health is more than just a gut instinct. After all, new research linking the importance of a healthy digestive tract to good overall well-being is coming out all the time.

In 2015, be on the lookout for new probiotics, different forms of dietary fibre, and natural health products that help support good digestive function.

3. Fermentation

Fermentation is an age old process which occurs when micro-organisms convert sugars into other forms of energy, such as lactic acid or alcohol.

As it turns out, an increasing amount of evidence is finding that fermented products can have more benefits than you can shake a fork at, since the fermentation process can help to increase the bioavailability of foods and, in some instances, can even produce antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

So this year, make sure to add kimchi or miso to your evening meal plans—or, if you’re really looking to add a healthy boost to your day, fermented supplements.

4. Pumpkin

What’s not to love about these wonderfully round squash? They’re tasty, they make delightful jack-o’-lanterns, and they’re chock full of vitamins, minerals, and even healthy fatty acids.

Beyond the traditional pie, pumpkin flesh can be a delicious addition to everything from chili to smoothies, and the oil and seeds of this colourful produce are equally versatile.

5. GMO labelling

With more than 60 countries all over the world placing restrictions or outright bans on genetically modified foods, Canadians are more aware than ever about the issues surrounding these products.

Luckily, there are plenty of non-GMO options out there for conscious consumers, and this trend is expected to continue as Canadians place increasing importance on knowing where their food comes from and how it may affect the environment.
